"My Mother's Button Collection".

Wall installation 2021. 250 x 250cm @ piece approx. 15cm x 15cm

This work is a response to re-discovering my mother's button box and buttons that she collected over a period of time. The individual forms are made from paper-clay and this allowed me to construct very thin pieces using vacuum formed molds that were taken of 3D prints.  They are reminiscent of the thinness of skin, and speak to our ability to touch each other and hold memories within this shell.  When I happened upon the buttons they became a natural pairing with the forms, and I sewed them in to the gaps.  It is a though they completed the forgotten areas, the holes accentuated and honoured by gold lustre.

THE KOREAN INTERNATIONAL CERAMICS BIENNALE 2021. "My Mother's Button Collection" is selected to be exhibited at the Biennale, Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art. October 1, 2021 to April 30 2022.
The work was originally displayed on a white wall allowing the piece to appear and disappear against the background. The pink wall in Korea emphasizes the forms and gives the piece a magical quality. The white wall is more subtle and brings the viewer in closer to look at the details. Both renditions are intriguing.
