No Man's Land - JENNY JUDGE

In early 2021 we found ourselves isolated in a very small hotel room for 14 days- we were making our way to our other country of citizenship, New Zealand. We were no longer in our home country of Canada, and not yet welcomed on New Zealand soil. We were carefully guarded, tested regularly for Covid 19 and given very little time outdoors. I spent the hours sketching on small pieces of paper I had brought with me, and my mark making became obsessive, as if I was marking time. The shapes were created using Gouache and those areas reacted with graphite in a different way to the untreated paper. These drawings are simple acts of belonging in the world, from a perspective of temporarily not belonging, and being caught between our two countries of citizenship, in a No Man's Land.
