August 28th-September 28, 2026. CIRCA Atelier. 2738 Dundas Street West, Toronto, Canada.
There are things we carry wherever we go.
Memories. Places. People. Objects. Traditions. Some are visible, others are quietly part of who we are. “The Things We Carry”, brings together artists whose works explore these ideas through ceramics
Artist statement:
Many of us still have family button collections that were originally kept in old tin containers. These reused boxes hold a treasure trove of stories and family memories, and contain buttons that were saved, carried through time, and passed down through generations.
In the Button Box series, I mould and cast my mother’s button collection into ceramics and finish them with underglazes, oxides or glazes. They are often intermingled with saved cotton threads and re-homed in a found tin container. These collections are an example of ‘things that we carry’ and are quiet reminders of past ways of Being: a time when we collected items to re-use, did not dispense of our clothing, the term ‘fast-fashion’ did not exist, and we mended as a means to re-purpose.
“These relics I create are a quiet reminder that solutions may lie in how we lived in past times.”
