sandstorm

2020

“The storm comes in quickly, shifting and moving the sand away from the forms, modifying them into new ones. “

A temporary site-specific installation is created during the Covid lockdown on Matapouri Beach, New Zealand.

The work exists as long as the wind or tide allows
  • I am in New Zealand during the initial Lockdown of COVID 19. I feel distance and loneliness in being away from the Northern Hemisphere, but I also relish in the beauty and solitude of the Southern Hemisphere beaches. I leave traces of unexplained forms for the passerby and give them an escape from daily news and the death counts of Covid reporting.

The deterioration the wind causes creates a new presence, a reminder of our own strength under stress and that we have the ability to change, and shift over time. The tide sweeps in and slowly washes the formations away, but not without leaving traces behind and emphasizing the importance of making a mark, no matter the scale.”

  • I create a number of temporary installations on the beach and use the existing molds from The Wonderment and Materiality Series. Because I am in strict lockdown in New Zealand I use the readily available material and locations at hand: sand and beaches.

The work exists for as long as the wind or tide allows. On my return to Canada I created "Forest Floor", a response to staying close to home and being grounded in all that surrounds me.

    Dimensions: @piece is approx. 15cm X 15cm X 10cm.
