GLASS LANDSCAPES

2016 - 2018

I use glass to emphasize fragility, temporariness, and the personal reflective qualities of location. My home and personal ‘place’ is constantly shifting and these works represent moments captured in time from a specific location.

our sense of ‘place’ is constantly shifting
  • I am intrigued by the small, hand-held object. The paperweight, for example, has influenced the scale of the landscape series. I am curious about their concept, history, and how we interact with them. At the turn of the century, a viewer was mesmerized by the ability to hold a world in their hand and to be able to gaze into the miniature.

I collect information from locations I am situated in and then reinterpret it into glass so that viewer is able to hold and gaze into a captured geography, and are able to sense the importance of that place. I am not making paperweights per se, but their influence has determined a new scale and approach for my work.

  • I use the technologies of scanning, photogrammetry, computer manipulation and 3D printing in order to capture landscapes and then incorporate these into traditional lost-wax and kiln-cast glass. Technology has allowed me to investigate geographic locations and miniaturize them. I want my viewers to respond with the same wonderment that early historical paperweights once offered: capturing and holding a small world in one’s hands.

Even though these captured geographic formations can be mapped through GPS coordinates or precise photography, the nature of location is constantly shifting, and these works represent moments captured in time. They are not only physical and geographic, but they are also personal and reflective, and intimate in scale. Glass emphasizes this fragility, temporariness and the personal reflective qualities of ‘place’.
