Pebbly bay

2020

I freeze the white sand into moulds hoping to make the forms stronger against the elements. I place them on the dark sand of Pebbly Bay. The sun melts the water out and leaves behind beautiful, rigid sand shapes. They are still no match for the incoming tide.”

...’being present’ exists in moments
  • I take the white sand from Matapouri Beach and make new forms, this time freezing sand and water into the moulds. I place the frozen shapes on the darker and rocky sand of Pebbly Bay. It feels ominous on this beach, the tide and waves are much stronger, the beach rougher. The forms are taken away swiftly, and the beach is left clean, without a trace, but ready to begin again. It reminds me that 'being present' exists in moments, and to be attentive to these times: they occur only momentarily.

  • The forms are made in molds that were created for the Wonderment Series (2019). I mix sand and water together and freeze them overnight- this makes the forms stronger and more detailed. I carry them in a cooler over to the dark and pebbly sands of Pebbly Bay. The tide is strong and quick in this small bay and the pieces last for only several hours.

    dimensions: Each form is approx. 15cm X 15cm X 10cm

Materials: White sand from Matapouri beach placed on the pebbly, black sand of Pebbly Bay.
